FAQ

How does Single-Stream Recycling Work?
Under the new Single-Stream recycling system, all recyclables are collected together in compacting semi automated loading trucks, transported and then mechanically sorted at Pratt Industries recycling plant. A system of conveyor belts, screens, electromagnets and blasts of air separate paper from plastics, glass and other materials. Sorted bales are then ready for sale in the marketplace to make new products.

What’s different about Single-Stream Recycling?
  • Single-Stream requires no sorting by participants, making it one of the easiest ways you can go green!
  • The hinged lids on the carts keep recyclable material secure, ensuring there is less loose material strewn about our streets.
  • The wheeled carts make transportation easier- no more heavy lifting!
  • More paper grades may be collected, including junk mail, telephone books and magazines.

Why Should I Recycle?
  • Is an important but underestimated weapon against climate change.
  • Conserves resources and helps condense land-filled materials.
  • Converts waste into valuable resources.
  • Keeps your neighborhood clean by preventing excess litter.

How do I find out my recycling collection day?
Your recycling day will be the same day as your regular trash collection day. If your recycling collection day is ever scheduled to change, you will be notified in advance. If you are unsure of your collection day, click on the Pick-Up Schedule link and click on the appropriate city for more information.

May I continue to use my old cart or garbage can for recyclables?
No. The blue wheeled carts that are provided are specifically designed to withstand the forces of the mechanical gripper and vehicle-lifting arm. Therefore, the contractor will only pick up the blue Pratt Industries carts.
IMPORTANT: If your cart is full of non-recyclable garbage, the cart will not be collected by PrattIndustries or the City.

Will my recycling be picked up on holidays?
Recycling collection takes place on all holidays with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. The collection schedule will be adjusted for these holidays. For more information, contact Pratt Industries Customer service at 1.888.347.7288.

What if I move?
The recycling cart must remain at your former residence. You can contact Pratt Industries for delivery of a cart to your new location if one is not already available at the residence.

Is there a special service for handicapped persons?
Backdoor recycling service is provided free of charge to handicapped residents living alone. If a resident has been previously approved by the City for backdoor waste collection, then he/she qualifies for backdoor recycling serviceas well.

How should hazardous waste be disposed of?
Do not place hazardous products such as paint or motor oil inside your recycling cart. Many common household products contain ingredients that are harmful and toxic when disposed of improperly. These are hazardous waste products that pollute our land and water. Do not dump these items in the trash, down the drain or on the ground as they can cause serious pollution.
